The most important thing you can do to promote your indie game
I’m about to let you in on a secret. It’s probably the single best thing you can do to promote your game, and yet, developers all over the world are ignoring it.
The trick?
Tell people about your game.
Yes it is that mind numbingly obvious, but for some reason people don’t. They create a beautiful game, with lovely imagery, never seen before features and functionality, truly a gaming master piece, and they think their job is done. They don’t tell anyone. They create a website, and then they wait. They wait for the players to find it, for the fame, the glory, and the millions of dollars. And they wait.
But unfortunately the world doesn’t work like that.
Build it and they probably won’t come.
The internet is a big place. And unless you tell people about your game, no one will ever find it. Because they sure as hell aren’t looking for it if they don’t even know it exists. And telling you mother and flat mate really doesn’t cut it.
Ah, I wish I read this a few months ago! I think deep down inside I knew it (as does everyone else), but it’s just like you said.
Talking about your game, promoting it, marketing it…I think it’s a different skill set than creating a game, which might be one of the reasons people don’t do it as much as they should.
The problem with developing marketing skills is that you have to go through the process of creating a nice game first. That’s why I know nothing about it.
